Sewer Backup in Houston: Private Line or Public Sewer
Protect people first
Stop using water when sewage returns through fixtures. Keep people away from the affected room and do not open a cleanout that may be under pressure. A visible backup is enough reason to arrange an assessment without entering contaminated water.
Separate a local fixture from a main restriction
One blocked basin can have a local cause. Several fixtures backing up, or wastewater rising in a low shower when a toilet flushes, can point farther downstream. Report the pattern rather than naming a presumed repair.
Check the responsible utility
[Houston Public Works](https://houstonpublicworks.org/protect-our-pipes) explains the distinction between private wastewater pipes and public collection infrastructure. Suspected public sewer issues within Houston can be reported to 311. Outside that service area, contact the actual water or wastewater provider shown on the property account.
Clearing and repairing are different scopes
Removing a blockage may restore flow without addressing root entry, a break or another defect. Ask whether a camera inspection is appropriate and request the findings before approving repair. Cleanup and disinfection are separate from clearing the line.
Prepare the request
Call (323) 916-2854 with the address, affected fixtures, recurrence history and management contact if applicable. Compare main sewer cleaning, camera inspection and sewer line repair.
